A recent craze
The 4x4 Madness dated in early 90. Is it the thirst for adventure, need to feel well protected by bodywork worthy of a Caterpillar or want to overlook contemporaries in traffic jams? Some of these things at once. However, the 4x4 is a budget item as impressive as its big wheels. But like other engines, there are different types of 4x4: from 2-seat for urban travel to large vehicles, worthy of Paris-Dakar.
Profile
There are so many types of vehicles: from 4x4 "recreation", capable of driving on the road, to the "high end", reserved for off-road situations, which will get us out of any situation. These are less interesting for general public. Manufacturers "play" more and more with polyvalence: urban life and family getaways. All suffer from a heavy weight and high architecture which penalize off-road vehicles in terms of consumption.
To know before purchase
- On the road, the imposing weight is mostly felt in the corners with making significant rolls during braking, distance has nothing to do with a sedan (plus 20% minimum).
- In off-road wear and breakage of the parts is greater. Await regular and costly maintenance because of high prices of spare tires, transmissions, etc..
- Underground parking, danger: the height of some 4x4 prevent them from entering.
- Unless the "high end", comfort - especially soundproofing - is to be compared from one model to another.
- The second-hand market is also interesting because the discount is certain but you should double your attention on the chassis. There are still 4x4s doing acrobatics and which got some hits.
- Adventure is synonymous with risk, and therefore a probable surcharge in terms of insurance.
Good to know
- In town, a 4x4/SUV consumes 43% more than a conventional car.
- Your must rely on an average consumption of 8.90 litres/100 km.
- 60% of sales relate versatile compact models, the cheapest class.
