Since the beginning National Car Rental company has made the strong and steady decision -  to be an industry leader, in size, customer service and quality. The company itself began in an uncommon way and since its origin has been taking pride in cutting edge services and business strategy.

In the decisive 1947, 24 independent and competing car rental agencies, not franchises, and not affiliated nor owned by any big-name or established company came together to make a point of their future. These independent owners realized that they would be stronger as a one working unit, than as competitors. The group came together to join its forces with more than 60 sites and 800 vehicles. Over the next twelve years, there were more companies and locations added to the group, and, in course of time, the corporation National Car Rental was born.

National Car Rental has always been proud of being an industry leader. Indeed, a lot of this car rental agency's own business strategies have become national standards. It was National Car Rental that both introduced and implemented one-way rentals and became the first company to use a PC system to make their daily reservations.

If you have ever got to one city, rented a car in one town and then got to another town to fly out or get home, and were able to leave the car in that next town, it is National Car Rental that you have to thank. They were the first company to establish the one way rental policy, so that rental cars weren't only available for people staying in town with their cars. Being the first agency to implement such strategy, National enabled their business clients to rent a car in one town and drive all over the place to do their business trips and leave the car in another location. This became a very attractive condition which created a lot of business for National. Eventually this became a way of doing business mostly for all car rental agencies. National also became one of the first companies to provide corporate accounts for its business customers.

National Car Rental also became a pioneer in the computer car hire industry. They were the first, in as early as in 1966 to implement the Telemax computer system, which maintained daily reservations. Then, In 1976 National also was the first to offer the "flat rate" rental to customers as part of the push for leisure travellers.

In 1987 National again was the first, bringing in their Emerald Club frequent renter program, offering discounts and additional services to its loyal members. In 2002, the company started the Quick Rent service offering to customers who didn't need to rent cars as often as the Emerald Club members, the ability to also bypass the counter and choose their own cars.
